A foot fracture is painful, but with the right care, it will heal properly. The first step in receiving treatment for your foot fracture is contacting Austin Podiatry, located in Austin, TX, and serving Buda, Kyle, and the nearby region, for an appointment with either Dr. Mark Robson, Dr. David Liou, or Dr. Thanh Nguyen.
Signs of a Foot Fracture
One of the first signs of a broken foot is having throbbing pain. Activity tends to worsen the pain.
Other potential symptoms of a foot fracture include:
- Swelling, bruising, or discoloration around the broken bone
- Tenderness
- Difficulty bearing weight on the foot
- Trouble moving your foot
Diagnosing a Foot Fracture
If you come in with signs of a break, our staff will ask questions about the pain you feel and when you began experiencing it. Our doctors will visually assess your foot to check for swelling, bruising, or any other signs of a fracture. You may be asked to move your foot in certain directions so our specialist can evaluate your range of motion.
To confirm a potential break, we may have you undergo an X-ray, which will let us figure out not only if you have a fracture but also the severity of it. If you don't have a break, we may need to conduct other imaging to evaluate the soft tissue of your foot.
Treating a Break
If we determine you have a break, the next step is to plan the appropriate course of action to promote healing. Sometimes, that means casting the foot. Other times, we may recommend you wear a boot or air cast.
In the more serious cases, surgery may be necessary if you have a displaced bone that can't be repositioned manually. When surgical intervention is recommended, we may need to place plates or screws for stabilization.
To ease the pressure you're placing on your foot as you're healing, we'll fit you for a pair of crutches. Before you leave, we'll guide you on how to use them properly and safely. We will also give you advice on the activities you'll need to avoid for designated amounts of time to prevent worsening the injury. Physical therapy may be suggested.
